Causes
The decrease in sperm count dropped 45% from 1990 due to increased exposure to environmental pollutants during the patients time in the womb or later in life. Pollutants such as PCBs, polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxin and several pesticides such as DDT, solvents adhesives, inks/paint, act like estrogens or anti-androgens. Other causes are cell phone radiation, kitchen & bathroom cleaners, clothes detergents, exposure to herbicides/pesticides, mercury & lead poisons, car exhausts, cash register receipts, chemicals such as EDC (Endocrine Disruptor Chemicals) which is an in utero disrupter which alters the sex hormone balance.
The Treatment
The fact that it takes 2 to 3 months for sperm to form, this is how long a patient needs treatment with acupuncture and herbal prescriptions for male infertility to at least begin to work. This treatment is focused on treating Kidney yin or yang deficiency and secondary qi and blood stasis. In cases where there is a bacterial infection, treatment with an antibiotic such as amoxicillin will be effective.
